Calm My Crazy: Meditation

Well this week has pretty much sucked.  My migraines decided to up the ante and make me miserable.  So I can tell you it was difficult to find a little happy and calm for this week.

Although I didn’t read the post from my friend Ilene over at The Fierce Diva Guide To Life at that moment, when I saw the title, I knew exactly what she would be writing about.  And just like she was tuned into what I needed when I needed it, I decided to try some meditation (again).  (BTW, I did finally read the post and it, of course, spoke right to me.  She seems to see into my soul like that.)

I have some meditation books and I’ve meditated in the past.  One of the many things in my life that I know helps, but I never seem to make time for.

So I got the kids off to camp, came home and set myself up for a 10 minute meditation.  Although the dogs decided that was the best time for them to lick and nuzzle my hands to try to get attention, I still managed to relax, focus and let go.

The next day I added some ocean sounds to remind me of the calm and beauty of the beach.  It worked quite nicely.

I was able to quiet my mind (mostly) and let go of a little stress.

I plan to continue fitting in that 10 minutes as often as I can.  I’m trying for everyday.  And I plan to get back into yoga to help with quieting my overactive brain.

It is really good to sit quietly and let all the spinning in your head wind down.  It’s easy to get numb to all the thoughts going round and round and round.  I also have a nasty negative self talk habit in my head so it is good to turn that off, if only for a little while.

So take a few minutes to still your mind each day.  I know I will keep trying to.

  1. When I was in grad school the only thing that would shut my brain off for an hour was hot yoga. I was going 4-5 times a week. I miss it now that I can’t do it anymore – it’s a tad expensive here in Texas.

Good for you for figuring out what you need and making it happen as often as you can!

  2. Just having ten minutes to yourself a day is wonderful! Keep it up and I hope you feel better soon.

  3. I so believe in quieting the brain. It says a lot of bad stuff to us if we don’t give it some rest. Mine was telling me that I could eat 12 cupcakes the other day and I would be just fine…yea, right! I knew I was just stressed and lit a candle and watched the deer in my back yard. I was going to just focus on the view of the trees but I lucked out and had some beautiful animals to calm me.
Hope you are feeling better! Also, don’t you think Ilene could be the next (bigger and better) Dr. Oz?! Love her!!

OK, first of all, I am so touched that my blog post spoke to you. And I am so happy for you that you are actively trying to quiet those inner voices, because I truly believe in my heart that’s when we start to find our inner peace.

I love the mission you are on right now, and I am that dedicated fan, cheering you on from the sidelines. If you need me to come onto the field, I will do that too. xo

Ilene, there are a few bloggers like you and Kristen who seem to always be speaking right to me when I read. As if we are on some sort of same cosmic wavelength and you guys can say the right things just when I need them. Honestly, it’s kind of creepy – haha Just kidding :)

But I love that I feel that when I read your stuff.

I am always desperately trying to improve my quality of life. I feel that there is a shift going on in my mind lately and hopefully that will allow me to be more successful. I’m tired of being the queen of start and stop.

I just may need you on the field with me. I have the worst time trying to do this on my own.

      Mmmm, cupcakes :)

We all need to quiet our minds I think. And I totally agree that Ilene would be awesome! Let’s get her on TV pronto!

  4. I have a huge problem with insomnia, so quieting my mind is always a priority. I haven’t had much success with meditation. U really should try hot yoga though it is expensive here in Wisconsin too. They do offer introductory specials from time to time.
