Out of the Political Closet

I feel as if I have had the door open for a while now, tentatively stepping a foot out here and there.

I put my Political Views as Liberal on Facebook.  I respond to and retweet links and statements I agree with on Twitter.

The last presidential election brought out a lot of anger and animosity and this time around it is even worse.

Everyone is allowed their opinion and everyone can express that opinion.

I don’t tend to comment on posts that I disagree with no matter how much it may get under my skin.  I have seen too many times how that quickly turns to name calling and hateful statements.

But I feel like I need to shout out something to the world.

I AM A LIBERAL AND I LOVE MY COUNTRY!  I FEEL JUST AS STRONGLY AS YOU DO!

Just because I try not to get into heated political arguments does NOT mean that I feel any less strongly about my beliefs.  I feel like people don’t think you care if you don’t constantly air your feelings.

I fear things are going to get uglier.  Misinformation and accusations and name calling are going to happen more and more.

Politics seems to be one of those subjects that you rarely change someone’s mind about when they are firmly on one side or the other.  Even so, there can be meaningful discussion.  It doesn’t have to get nasty.

I like to hear thoughts on both sides.  I watch all the debates, primary and general election.  I watch both conventions.  I don’t want to be close minded.  I want to hear what I may disagree with so that I can keep informed.

I may have to bite my tongue or count to 10 when what I hear seems outrageous or inflammatory.  But I still want to hear everything I can.

As we get closer to November, let’s all remember that we wouldn’t get so emotional if we didn’t ALL care about this country.  Whatever side you are on, there are real people on the other side and no one is out to destroy this country or the world.

We disagree.  And that’s OK.  Vote.  That is the greatest way to express your opinion.

  1. I LOVE you for coming out!
When I started TFDGTL, I swore to myself that there would be no politics or religion on the blog. While I kept to that so far, it’s always subject to change. One of the reasons that I made that promise to myself is that I never want to get in the “crossfire” of the nastiness! You are a brave girl – and just for the record – my political views seem to be along the same line as yours., xo

    • This post has been in my drafts in some form or another for a very, very long time. I just finally decided, to heck with it, I’m going to finish and publish and hope I don’t lose all my readers :)

  2. Being different is what makes our nation great. I am so thankful that we all have our say in how our government is run. We may not all agree but we do have a voice and our votes count.

    • Jon Stewart (my love) made a comment on The Daily Show about how no one wants to win an election because the other guy’s campaign sort of implodes. We all lose if we don’t have intelligent debate over all the issues. We need to listen to the important stuff and blow off the mud slinging.

  3. I think you are being ridiculously brave!! I’m impressed – if totally scared to follow your lead. I love that you reminded us that there are real people on all sides of an issue. I can’t stand it when we all start shouting sound bites at each other. Thank you for calling us to HEAR each other! I don’t understand why folks can’t agree to disagree and still be civil.

    • I was totally afraid of getting ripped apart in comments. It’s good to see that is not the case. Although I once did get called a “coward” because I said we would have to “agree to disagree”. Nice, huh?
