I AM IN A BOOK! Check out Holly Daze!

Well I am just giddy up in here.  I recently submitted a post to the wonderful ladies over at Life Well Blogged and to my utter shock they chose to use my piece in a REAL LIFE BOOK!

That’s right, I AM IN A BOOK!

I can hardly contain my excitement!  I mean, I think I’m funny and all that but to have others think my post was funny enough to put in a book just totally blows my mind.

So, if you are so inclined, you can download the book currently for Kindle and soon it should be available in other formats.

This is the third book in the series and the other two are also quite hilarious so you can check them out as well No Laughing Allowed (Life Well Blogged) and To Bliss and Back (Life Well Blogged).  You will see many awesome bloggers in this series and it is really nice to have these funny posts all collected together for you in one place.

Isn’t this the coolest?  It is.  I know it is.

Book Review: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

For the June book club at The SITS Girls I read The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

I had not heard of the book before it was chosen for the book club but it sounded intriguing.  I wasn’t sure if it was up my alley or not but I figured I would give it a shot.  Here is what the synopsis from Amazon says:

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway: a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them both, this is a game in which only one can be left standing. Despite the high stakes, Celia and Marco soon tumble headfirst into love, setting off a domino effect of dangerous consequences, and leaving the lives of everyone, from the performers to the patrons, hanging in the balance.

I must admit that it took me a while to get into the story.  I’m talking about 100 pages.  I was a little confused by the split narrative that told the story of a young circus goer.  It made me a little impatient until I decided that it must play into the main story at the end so I should enjoy the different point of view.  Once I did that, I was able to settle into the ride.

There is a lot going on here.  A lot of imagery and magic and I think that helps to paint a nice picture in your head.  There are many characters along with the main characters, Marco and Celia, and I like how those characters contribute to the main story even if we don’t end up knowing all to much about their background.

It is a long story that plays out over decades.  And Marco and Celia spend much of the story apart so it is not a typical romance.  But the tale and the characters are interesting and the conclusion I believe is satisfying and fitting for the story.

All in all, I found it to be a good read.  I would define it as an intricate tale like a Harry Potter book rather than a romance.  If you like imagery and magic and characters wrapped in a fantastical story, you will likely find this book a good fit.  If you like a quick read or a typical romance, this is not for you.

Calm My Crazy: Lost In A Book

I remember as a child reading about Fudge and Margaret and the girls of Sweet Valley High.

I even had these romance books where you could choose the path through the book by making different choices of whom to go to the dance with or which party to go to on a weekend.  All leading you do the perfect boyfriend for your choices.

I believe that aside from books I had to read for high school, the first real thinker I read may have been The Firm.  I remember working as a receptionist and having the book in my desk so I could read through the day and I finished it in 2 workdays.

Stories have a way of drawing me in.  I identify with certain characters, put myself in their situations, feel their pains and their joys.

I want to immerse myself in the story completely and tend to have trouble putting books down.  This would be why I don’t always have a book I’m reading because I have to space them out or I will completely ignore the real world.

A few summers back, I tore through all 7 Harry Potter books in a few weeks.  I had just watched the sixth movie and wanted to know the whole story so I started at the beginning and read obsessively until I was all done.

I picked up the Stephanie Plum series many years back and read the 8 or so that had been printed at the time, then waited impatiently for the next, and the next, and so on.

Books give me a way to detach my brain from the everyday and just enjoy a good story.  One of these days I would like to be able to leisurely read so that I could steal moments here and there in fantasy without becoming too absorbed.

I love a good story.
